(Murray, Utah—October 1, 2024) UTOPIA Fiber, the nation’s largest and most successful Open Access network, announced today the findings from its 2024 Customer Feedback Survey. Following a record-five completed Utah city builds in 2023, UTOPIA Fiber recently passed 70,000 subscribers and increased its Net Promoter Score to 61, all while delivering the fastest and most reliable internet speeds in the United States.

According to the results of its 2024 Survey, subscribers select UTOPIA Fiber based on several key factors. Reliability and speed tied at 99%, followed by price at 98% and the availability of an all-fiber network at 96%. Additionally, 94% of subscribers value the ability to choose their Internet Service Provider (ISP), 89% dislike large telecom providers, and 72% consider UTOPIA Fiber’s co-sponsorship by their city an important factor in their decision.

“Our 2024 Customer Feedback Survey confirms what we see and hear every day—Utahns value the speed, reliability, and superior customer experience that UTOPIA Fiber delivers,” said Roger Timmerman, Executive Director at UTOPIA Fiber. “Our commitment to providing choice, transparency, and community-owned networks clearly sets us apart from the incumbent providers. We thank our subscribers for their candid feedback and work hard to meet and exceed their expectations.”

Respondents ranked being a Utah-owned business, having a choice of ISPs, excellent customer service, partnering with local cities to build fiber networks, and a commitment to transparency and honesty as the top five things they love most about UTOPIA Fiber. When asked about the main reasons for their dissatisfaction with their previous internet provider, respondents ranked high prices(70%), slow speeds (58%), unreliable connection (55%), and poor customer service (53%) as top concerns. Secondary issues included hidden fees (31%), the unavailability of fiber in their area (30%), and binding contracts (29%).

Kim McKinley, Deputy Director & CMO at UTOPIA Fiber, added, “I always say that it’s the people and communities behind these networks that make them so successful. It’s both motivating and gratifying to read the thousands of comments from our customers who take the time to share their experience and what’s most important to them.”

Other key findings from the 2024 Customer Feedback Survey include:

  • 99% recognize fiber as important infrastructure.
  • 88% report everyone in their family can use Internet-connected devices without bandwidth issues.
  • 87% agree that UTOPIA Fiber has improved their streaming experience.
  • 85% experienced fewer Internet outages since joining UTOPIA Fiber.
  • 80% heard about UTOPIA Fiber from their city, a friend, neighbor, or a family member.
  • 75% believe UTOPIA Fiber’s network has improved their community.

Additionally, 94% of respondents report using their internet for streaming movies & TV, closely followed by browsing the web (92%), and then Smart Home devices (70%), remote work (68%), online gaming (52%), school (47%), and backup of large files to the cloud (31%).

Half of the UTOPIA Fiber survey respondents have selected speeds of 1 Gbps or higher; 33% have between 11-20 devices on their home network; 53% telecommute for work at least once a week, and 25% are fully remote.

Approximately 4,000 UTOPIA Fiber subscribers, ages 18+ were polled in twenty Utah cities—a response rate consistent with the 2023 survey. The sample size was from cities as small as Woodland Hills with a population of 1,500 residents to the second largest city in Utah, West Valley City, with a population of over 132,000.

Utopia Fiber Adds Three New Residential Internet Service Providers to its Open Access Network https://fiberbroadband.org/2024/05/07/utopia-fiber-adds-three-new-residential-internet-service-providers-to-its-open-access-network/ Tue, 07 May 2024 16:29:06 +0000 https://fiberbroadband.org/?p=15733 Utopia Fiber Adds Three New Residential Internet Service Providers to its Open Access Network

Now Offering Utah Communities a Choice of 18 ISPs: New Pricing Includes 10 Gbps Symmetrical for as Low as $149 and a New 2.5 Gbps Option

The Woodlands, Texas (May 7, 2024) UTOPIA Fiber, the nation’s largest and most successful community-owned Open Access network, announced at Broadband Communities Summit the addition of three new residential Internet Service Providers (ISPs). As of May 1, the UTOPIA Open Access Marketplace now offers Utah communities a choice of 18 residential providers with a new 2.5 Gbps internet option and a 10 Gbps symmetrical plan for under $150.

“Joining the UTOPIA Fiber network has never been more advantageous,” said Roger Timmerman, Executive Director, UTOPIA Fiber. “We are championing the freedom for Utah residents to choose the plan that best suits their needs, offering the most competitive pricing, and providing a future-proof fiber solution with unparalleled choices among internet service providers. Our fiber infrastructure not only delivers among the nation’s fastest symmetrical speeds, but also guarantees reliable and affordable internet connectivity with one simple installation, no contracts, and no hidden fees.”

After a careful vetting process through an RFP, WiFi Pros (Bountiful City), ETS (Layton City), and Fusion Networks (Salem City) were invited to join the UTOPIA Fiber network, effective May 1, 2024. WIFI Pros offers a variety of plans to suit different needs and budgets, with options including: 250 Mbps starting at $38, 1 Gbps starting at $58, 2.5 Gbps starting at $68, and 10 Gbps starting at $208. Additionally, they offer Ooma Home Phone Service for free with a one-time $79 fee for the hardware. ETS offers 1 Gbps for $55, while Fusion Networks provides 250 Mbps for $35 and 1 Gbps for $45.

Most notably, Sumo Fiber, a veteran member of the UTOPIA Open Access Marketplace, is now offering 10 Gbps symmetrical for $119, plus a $30 UTOPIA Fiber infrastructure fee, bringing the total cost to $149 per month. This is among the lowest prices in the nation. For more details on all residential pricing options, visit:  https://www.utopiafiber.com/residential-pricing/

Kimberly McKinley, Chief Marketing Officer and Deputy Director of UTOPIA Fiber, stated, “UTOPIA Fiber not only provides exceptional customer service but also offers a variety of choices that foster competitive pricing. Typically, consumers have limited options—often just one or two providers, and rarely fiber.  By collaborating with the communities we serve, UTOPIA swiftly builds this essential infrastructure. We then encourage locally-owned ISPs to join and compete within our network, which greatly benefits residents. Since May 1, we’ve already seen a big uptick in demand for the new 2.5 Gbps service and expect to welcome two more ISPs to our residential marketplace soon.”

UTOPIA Fiber is an inter-local agency providing Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services in 21 Utah cities and in 50 cities for business class service. As an Open Access network, UTOPIA Fiber builds fast and reliable fiber infrastructure, and enables residents to choose from 18 private-sector ISPs—creating more competition and keeping the internet pricing affordable.

UTOPIA Fiber Announces Record Numbers in 2023, Completing Five Open Access Fiber Builds in Utah https://fiberbroadband.org/2024/02/20/utopia-fiber-announces-record-numbers-in-2023-completing-five-open-access-fiber-builds-in-utah/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 18:33:26 +0000 https://fiberbroadband.org/?p=14497 UTOPIA Fiber Announces Record Numbers in 2023, Completing Five Open Access Fiber Builds in Utah

Nation’s Largest & Most Successful Community-Owned Network Exceeds 60,000 Subscribers, Demonstrates Remarkable Year-Over-Year Growth

New Operational Partnership Model Launched in Bountiful and Already Releasing Footprints

Murray, UTAH (February 20, 2023) – After 14 years of consecutive growth, UTOPIA Fiber released its 2023 numbers today showing a record number of five city buildouts in one year and attaining over 60,000 subscribers—half of whom joined in the last 3-4 years. The community-owned fiber network also achieved superior levels of customer satisfaction, with a 4.6 Google Rating and a Net Promoter Score of 60—which is considered exceptionally high—and is the highest-ranked internet company in Utah and among the highest in the United States. Additionally, UTOPIA Fiber placed 2.7 million linear feet of fiber in 2023, enough to encircle Salt Lake City almost seven times, connected 23,059 homes, 1,272 businesses, 41 Homeowner Associations (HOAs), and added 8,233 new residential subscribers.

“This past year has been one of UTOPIA Fiber’s best yet,” said Roger Timmerman, Executive Director, UTOPIA Fiber. “By partnering with communities across Utah and the West, we’ve built vital infrastructure that aims to ensure residents and businesses benefit from fast, reliable, and affordable fiber internet connectivity, while leveraging UTOPIA’s expertise and proven track record in efficient network operation, maintenance, and exceptional customer service.”

Most notably in 2023, UTOPIA Fiber launched a new operational partnership model—Bountiful Fiber powered by UTOPIA Fiber—the first-of-its-kind collaboration in Utah. The project received unanimous city approval and broke ground in August 2023, after a comprehensive three-year research and evaluation process by the city. Engaged and passionate Bountiful City residents organized and successfully fought back against a dark money-funded misinformation campaign aimed at obstructing and significantly delaying the construction of their community-owned network. UTOPIA Fiber has already begun releasing the first completed footprints of the Bountiful Fiber network in record time.

Here’s how UTOPIA Fiber’s 2023 numbers add up:

  • $35.63M new financing secured
  • 1.5 million linear feet of underground conduit installed
  • 2.7 million linear feet of fiber-optic cable placed
  • 5 new fully connected cities in Utah:
    • Orem, Cedar Hills, Pleasant Grove, Syracuse, and Santa Clara
  • 14 new footprints released
  • 23,059 new homes connected
  • 41 Homeowner Associations (HOAs) connected
  • 8,233 new residential subscribers
    • Overall, 62,000+ subscribers, half of whom joined in the last 3-4 years
  • 1,272 new businesses connected
  • New Gig customer signups: 5,397 | Total Gig customers: 25,779
  • New 10 Gig customers: 37 (residential) | Total 10 Gig customers: 143
  • 4.6-star overall Google rating
    • 2000+ reviews
  • 60 Net Promoter Score (NPS)
    • On a scale of –100 to 100
    • With most national incumbents below zero or barely breaking the double digits

“The magic of UTOPIA Fiber is that we are by and for the people in the communities we serve,” explained Timmerman. “Residents and city officials were tired of waiting for fast internet to become available in their communities. They took the matter into their own hands—correctly characterizing fiber as vital infrastructure and demanding more choice and affordable pricing. We continually build networks that deliver among the fastest speeds in the United States, consistent reliability, and the freedom to choose your own Internet Service Provider (ISP)—most of which are fantastic local Utah companies themselves.”

Notably, since 2009, UTOPIA has designed, built, and financed nearly half-a-billion dollars worth of successful community broadband projects in Utah and the West. When UTOPIA Fiber comes to town, it brings more than fiber availability, it introduces real competition and choice. Today, the UTOPIA network has placed fiber infrastructure that provides access to approximately 200,000 businesses and residences in over 50 communities.

UTOPIA Fiber is an inter-local agency providing Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services in 21 Utah cities and in 50 cities for business class service. As an Open Access network, UTOPIA Fiber builds fast and reliable fiber infrastructure, and enables residents to choose from 15 private-sector ISPs—creating more competition and keeping the internet pricing affordable.

Murray, UTAH (December 13, 2023) – UTOPIA Fiber announced today the successful completion of its fiber-to-the-home build in the City of Santa Clara, Utah. The $6.7 million project, which commenced construction on May 19, 2022, has now concluded, providing ultra-high-speed broadband access to every residential and business address in the city and signaling the beginning of its expansion into southern Utah communities.

This milestone marks yet another significant achievement for UTOPIA Fiber as it adds Santa Clara as its fifth city in 2023, and 19th city overall, with the fastest residential and business internet speeds available in the United States. The first homes were seamlessly connected to the lit fiber network on May 24, 2023, and the entire project, including 3,242 residential addresses, was completed on October 31, 2023.

“Today’s announcement represents a notable accomplishment for both the community of Santa Clara and UTOPIA Fiber,” stated Roger Timmerman, Executive Director & CEO of UTOPIA Fiber. “We’re thrilled to expand into Washington County, solidifying our presence in southern Utah and our commitment to delivering ultra-high-speed broadband to more local communities. Santa Clara represents our fifth successful city connection in 2023, and a key entry into the rapidly growing southern Utah fiber market.”

UTOPIA Fiber’s Open Access model, the largest of its kind in the United States, empowers multiple private-sector internet service providers (ISPs) to compete and foster a net-neutral environment that encourages free-market competition. This approach leads to enhanced broadband access for residents while promoting service excellence and affordability.

Rick Rosenberg, Mayor of Santa Clara City, said, “As our region grows, the demand for speed and capacity has skyrocketed. We needed a city-wide all-fiber network to ensure our community’s success now and in the future. We’re proud to be the first UTOPIA Fiber city in Southern Utah, and beyond excited to offer our residents and businesses the nation’s fastest internet speeds and a choice of competitive ISPs. It’s a game changer!”

Since 2009, the Santa Clara City project—like all other UTOPIA Fiber projects—has been funded and grown solely through subscriber revenue. The completion of this project further extends UTOPIA Fiber’s reach, providing residents with access to speeds up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and 100 Gbps for businesses, currently the fastest speeds offered in the United States.

Interested Santa Clara residents and businesses can visit www.UTOPIAfiber.com for more information on how to sign up for UTOPIA Fiber services.

UTOPIA Fiber’s 2023 Customer Feedback Survey https://fiberbroadband.org/2023/10/02/utopia-fibers-2023-customer-feedback-survey/ Tue, 03 Oct 2023 02:07:03 +0000 https://fiberbroadband.org/?p=12278 UTOPIA Fiber’s 2023 Customer Feedback Survey

UTOPIA FIBER’S 2023 CUSTOMER FEEDBACK SURVEY REVEALS GROWING CONSUMER AWARENESS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN FIBER BROADBAND CHOICES

AS FIBER NETWORKS EXPAND VIA MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES, CONSUMERS INCREASINGLY FAVOR LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS AND COMMUNITY-BASED RECOMMENDATIONS

Company Notes Consumers Prioritize Decision Factors Beyond Speed, Reliability, and Price When Selecting an ISP

(Murray, Utah—October 2, 2023) As American communities continue to invest in expanding fiber-to-the-home infrastructure, the importance of community engagement and early education about fiber’s benefits becomes increasingly evident as measured in a recent survey of broadband subscribers released today by UTOPIA Fiber, the nation’s largest Open Access fiber Internet network. Key findings indicate consumers prioritize local partnerships and community-based recommendations in addition to speed, reliability, and price when selecting an Internet Service Providers (ISP).

Approximately 4,000 UTOPIA Fiber subscribers, ages 18+ were polled in twenty Utah cities—a response rate up almost 60 percent from the 2022 survey. The sample size was from cities as small as Woodland Hills with a population of 1,500 residents to the second largest city in Utah, West Valley City, with a population of over 136,000.

According to the “Customer Feedback Survey” results, respondents reported that they selected UTOPIA Fiber based on factors categorized as (extremely, very, and moderately) important factors: Speed (97.76%), Reliability (97.53%), Price (91.71%), the Utilization of a Fiber Network (89.94%), and Dislike of Large Telecom Companies (78.79%).

When survey respondents were asked how they heard about UTOPIA Fiber, an overwhelming majority (80.40%) said that they learned about it either from their city or municipality (41.18%) or through a friend or neighbor (39.22%). Many individual responses cited various sources, including awareness generated by the initial project announcement, anticipation of UTOPIA becoming available in their area, positive word-of-mouth recommendations, and a sense of pride in choosing a locally owned, community-focused company over larger incumbent providers.

“The significant takeaway here is that consumers prioritize factors beyond price, such as local investment and choice,” remarked Kimberly McKinley, Deputy Director and Chief Marketing Officer of UTOPIA Fiber. “Furthermore, consumers have shared that their communities have improved significantly (71.55%) due to municipalities’ wise decisions to invest in fiber, providing every home and business with equitable opportunities and services at a very reasonable and fair price. The overall feedback from our survey suggests community engagement is an essential element in the success of building fiber networks.”

Demand for ISP choice and competition is on the rise, supported by both local municipalities and residents who consider fiber optic networks essential infrastructure. Some municipalities even choose to take ownership of their own open access networks at no cost to taxpayers. Recent events in Bountiful City, UT, illustrate that a well-informed community and city, dedicating time to research and evaluate network models, can successfully overcome opposition efforts to obstruct fiber projects.

These survey findings underscore the importance of early community education and involvement in the fiber project lifecycle. Among respondents, 71.44% emphasized the importance of UTOPIA Fiber being co-sponsored by their city, while a significant 93.38% valued the ability to choose their internet service provider. Furthermore, 87.68% said that it was either “extremely important” (67.34%) or “very important” (20.34%) that their internet service provider does not control internet speed based on content type.

Additionally, 93.07% of respondents reported using the internet for streaming TV or movies, closely followed by email (92.97%), web surfing (90.23%), shopping (87.39%), social media (81.82%), and video games (70.97%). McKinley concluded, “It is gratifying to hear that our customers strongly agree that UTOPIA has improved their streaming experience (87.28%)delivered fewer internet outages than their previous provider (85.34%), and enabled every member of their family to use an increasing number of internet-connected devices without bandwidth issues (88.75%).”
