  • New Nokia software introduces a marketplace with revenue-generating applications, along with an ecosystem of 3rd party software developers.
  • Nokia is the first to bring a solution to the market based on open-source software and industry standards, and designed for multi-vendor environments.

21 August 2023

Orlando, Florida – Nokia today announced the launch of Corteca, a new end-to-end home connectivity software for broadband devices that will enable service providers to significantly enhance customer experiences, generate new revenues and reduce operational costs.

Service providers are bringing multi-gigabit speeds to the home, but more than 40% of households are reporting issues with in-home connectivity. Operators remain challenged by today’s in-home Wi-Fi solutions, plagued by complex installation processes, limited interoperability, inconsistent coverage and dead zones that lead to frustrated subscribers. Nokia’s Corteca addresses these challenges, providing a combination of advanced Wi-Fi performance and devices in the home along with effective customer support tools and proactive monitoring in the cloud. In recent customer trials, Nokia’s Corteca solution increased peak hour Wi-Fi throughput by 70 percent and reduced average handling time of helpdesk calls by 50 percent.

Nokia Corteca home connectivity software consists of:

  • Corteca Cloud: an intelligent controller with a “single pane of glass” interface to manage both home Wi-Fi networks, and network-wide broadband device deployments.
  • Corteca Applications: a marketplace with value-added applications so service providers can generate new sources of revenue.
  • Corteca Device Software: powering Nokia’s growing line-up of broadband devices for Fiber and FWA gateways and mesh Wi-Fi beacons.

The Corteca Cloud, formerly known as the WiFi Cloud Controller, introduces a new marketplace to deliver Corteca Applications. This gives service providers access to a catalog of value-added, revenue generating services. The marketplace allows operators to try applications before purchasing and centrally manage what is made available to their subscribers. Corteca Applications cover a variety of uses cases, including enhanced security, intelligent device fingerprinting, gaming optimization, and more. In addition, Nokia has opened up the marketplace to an eco-system of 3rd party developers to bring additional value-added applications to the market.

Nokia’s Corteca Device Software runs on the in-home broadband and Wi-Fi devices and works in real-time with cloud-based operations to monitor and manage the end-user experience. Nokia combines open-source software with industry standards and is the first vendor to provide seamless communications and management for multi-vendor mesh Wi-Fi and devices. The Corteca Device Software also provides a container application framework to isolate and applications from the underlying operating system. It allows operators to seamlessly run, manage, and dynamically update applications independent of the device software to reduce costs.

Michael PhilpottResearch Director, Digital Consumer Services at Omdia, said: “Providing an unparalleled broadband user experience in the home has long been a challenge that operators continue to grapple with today. Navigating the complex terrain of single Wi-Fi interfaces, device compatibility and user behavior requires a harmonious symphony of technical expertise and customer-centric solutions. Having the ability to both manage the devices in the home and deliver value applications that can be targeted to each unique customer can be a game changer for operators seeking to drive enhanced user experiences and generate additional revenue.”

Justin Doucettehead of Wi-Fi for Fixed Networks Broadband Devices at Nokia, said: “Similar to what the PC market and the mobile phone market did in the past, the CPE market is systematically separating the application from the operating system in order to empower developers, enable operators, and delight users. The key is a unique and truly open approach – with no vendor lock-in and the ability to onboard and integrate with 3rd parties.”

Nokia extends Quillion portfolio with world’s smallest OLT supporting 25G PON https://fiberbroadband.org/2021/11/02/nokia-extends-quillion-portfolio-with-worlds-smallest-olt-supporting-25g-pon/ Tue, 02 Nov 2021 04:00:00 +0000 https://fiberbroadband.org/2021/11/02/nokia-extends-quillion-portfolio-with-worlds-smallest-olt-supporting-25g-pon/ Espoo, Finland – Nokia has today announced its smallest Optical Line Terminal (OLT) deployed with the Quillion chipset. The Lightspan DF-16GM OLT can simultaneously provide services from 1 to 25 Gb/s making it the fastest mini-OLT on the market. Designed for deployment in street cabinets and available today, the device is targeted at fiber network providers looking to extend their networks beyond dense urban environments.

The majority of fiber deployments have so far focused on high density, high volume urban areas where the business case is strongest. However, fiber network providers are now extending networks to business parks and rural areas with low density populations, as well as using them to connect small cells within their cellular networks.

The Lightspan DF-16GM addresses the market for these new use-cases which require high-capacity solutions in a small form-factor and that can be easily intalled in distributed enviromnents such as street cabinets and base stations.

Emir Halilovic, Principal Analyst at Global Data, said: “Cabinet-based OLTs give operators a lot more flexibility in network design and the demand for small size fiber solutions has increased significantly over the last few years. 10Gb/s plus capacity and low latency is needed to take advantage of new opportunities such as in the enterprise market, 5G transport, and edge cloud computing space. For instance, a CSP could run a line to a cabinet in an industrial park and then use the mini OLT to connect multiple SMEs on the park”

As the only mini OLT on the market to incorporate GPON, XGS-PON and 25G PON, the multipon Lightspan DF-16GM is fastest in its class and it also uses half the energy of its predecessor and 25% lower than prescribed by the EU Code of Conduct.

Sandy Motley, President, Fixed Networks at Nokia, said: “Fiber deployments are accelerating and extending to rural areas and new segments such as enterprise and mobile transport. We are thrilled to be able offer the Lightspan DF-16GM to operators who require high capacity, low density, small format fiber solutions which can be installed in street cabinets and enables them to address these new opportunities.”

Nokia and Vodafone Harness Machine Learning on Google Cloud to Detect Network Anomalies https://fiberbroadband.org/2021/07/20/nokia-and-vodafone-harness-machine-learning-on-google-cloud-to-detect-network-anomalies/ Tue, 20 Jul 2021 04:00:00 +0000 https://fiberbroadband.org/2021/07/20/nokia-and-vodafone-harness-machine-learning-on-google-cloud-to-detect-network-anomalies/ Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Vodafone today have launched a jointly developed machine learning (ML) product, running on Google Cloud, to quickly detect and remediate network anomalies before they impact Vodafone customers.

Based on Nokia Bell Labs technology and developed after a Nokia-Vodafone agreement signed in 2020, the Anomaly Detection Service product is being rolled out across Vodafone’s pan-European network. The product quickly detects and troubleshoots irregularities, such as mobile site congestion and interference, and unexpected latency, that can impact customer service quality.

Following an initial deployment in Italy on more than 60,000 4G cells, Vodafone will extend the service to all its European markets by early 2022. Anomaly detection is offered “as-a-service,” an important dimension to Nokia’s Cloud and Network Services’ business group strategy, and there are plans to eventually apply Anomaly Detection Service to Vodafone’s 5G and core networks.

Vodafone expects that around 80 percent of all its anomalous mobile network issues and capacity demands will be automatically detected and addressed using Anomaly Detection Service.

Deployment on Google Cloud allows Vodafone engineers to make fast and informed decisions, like boosting capacity where customers need it most, based on data managed through Google Cloud’s secure and reliable data and analytics services. On Google Cloud, Anomaly Detection Service allows the streaming of network data to Vodafone’s data analytics platform, enabling analysis simultaneously of data across multi-vendor environments.

The Nokia-Vodafone deal signed last year complements Vodafone’s recent six-year agreement with Google Cloud, also a Nokia partner, to jointly build integrated cloud-based capabilities backed by hubs of networking and software engineering expertise.

Johan Wibergh, Chief Technology Officer, Vodafone, said: “We are building an automated and programmable network that can respond quickly to our customers’ needs. As we extend 5G across Europe, it is important to match the speed and responsiveness of this new technology with a great service. With machine learning, we can ensure a consistently high-quality performance that is as smart as the technology behind it.”

Amol Phadke, Managing Director, Telecom Industry Solutions, Google Cloud, said:
“We are thrilled to partner with Nokia and Vodafone to deliver a data- and AI-driven solution that scales quickly and leverages automation to increase cost efficiency and ensures seamless customer experiences across Europe. As behaviors change and the data needed for analysis increases in velocity, volume, and complexity, automation and a cloud-based data platform are now key in making fast and informed decisions.”

Anil Rao, Research Director, Analysys Mason, said: “Vodafone’s anomaly detection use case, developed in partnership with Nokia and run on Google Cloud, automates root-cause analysis for efficient network planning, optimization, and operations. This type of partnership provides a new opportunity for operators to rethink data management and increase the focus on use cases and application development.”

Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services, Nokia, said: “This first commercial deployment of Anomaly Detection Service with Vodafone on Google Cloud provides a great boost to customer service. It not only addresses the critical need to quickly detect and remedy anomalies impacting network performance using machine learning-based algorithms, but it also highlights Nokia’s technology leadership and the deep technical expertise of Nokia Bell Labs.”
