The FBA Sustainability Working Group’s comprehensive analysis reveals that Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks significantly outperform Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) networks in terms of environmental impact. From manufacturing to operation, FTTH demonstrates superior sustainability across all metrics.
Key findings include:
- 60% lower embodied carbon: FTTH networks require significantly fewer resources to build.
- 7% less installation carbon: FTTH deployment has a smaller carbon footprint.
- Up to 96% lower operational carbon: FTTH networks consume far less energy.
- 18% less carbon from customer premise equipment: FTTH devices have a smaller environmental impact.
While overbuilding an HFC network with fiber may initially increase carbon emissions, the long-term benefits are substantial. Within six years, the operational carbon savings from fiber-based services offset the initial investment, making FTTH the clear sustainability leader.
